Sächsische Schweiz
(Saxon Swiss) National Park

  • Around the towns Pirna, Königstein, and Bad Schandau, a landscape can be visited which is famous since painters like Ludwig Richter and Caspar David Friedrich detected its beauty in the 18th and 19th century. The "Saxon Swiss" (on the German side, covering 360 km²) and the "Bohemian Swiss" (on the Czech side) form the Elbsandsteingebirge (Elbe Sandstone Mountains) that offers numerous labyrinths of rocks with ways for hiking and climbing. The most famous point is the Bastei, a rock near the village Rathen that rises 200 meters immediately over the Elbe river.
